Los Angeles Press Club
The Los Angeles Press Club is an American journalism organization founded in 1913.[1][2] It honors journalists through its annual National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards and SoCal Journalism Awards.[3] As of 2023, the Los Angeles Press Club hosted the 65th SoCal Journalism Awards and the 16th National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards in downtown Los Angeles.[4][5]
History
State records and municipal historical records show that an earlier, original Los Angeles Press Club filed its initial corporate paperwork in 1913. That version became legally inactive during the Great Depression and World War II before the 1946 reorganization took over its assets and trademark.
Founded after World War II, the Greater Los Angeles Press Club operated a café and cocktail lounge for members from 1960 into the 1980s, then leased out the space as interest in gathering there declined.
In the early 1970s, the club spoke out on press freedom, protesting the arrest of reporter William Farr during the Charles Manson trial. Its archived records include newsletters, annual publications, administrative files, correspondence on First Amendment issues, and material on the club's annual Headliner Awards.[6]
In 2024, the Board of Directors includes the organization's president – Robert Kovacik of KNBC,[7] vice president – Cher Calvin of KTLA,[8] and treasurer Chris Palmeri of Bloomberg. The executive director is Swedish-born journalist Diana Ljungaeus.[9]
