Life and career

Bisgaard was born in Aarhus, Denmark in 1972 and studied film directing at the Polish National Film School.[1] His early work includes Choka! (2001), a documentary about street children in Lusaka, Zambia,[1] which received two International Documentary Association nominations for Feature Documentary and Pare Lorentz Award.[2]

In 2007, Bisgaard's short fiction film Koma was nominated for the Robert Award for Best Danish Short Fiction Film. The film was his first fiction work after completing his studies at film school in Poland.[3]

In 2010, Bisgaard and Ugandan filmmaker Donald Mugisha participated in the DOX:LAB programme, which paired Nordic and filmmakers from developing countries to develop documentary projects. Their collaboration resulted in The Kampala Story.[4]

The Kampala Story was directed and written by Bisgaard and Mugisha, with Bisgaard also serving as cinematographer. The 62-minute Uganda-Denmark production follows Apio, a 14-year-old Karamojong girl who travels to Kampala after her father stops sending money to support her family.

The film premiered in 2011 at the CPH:DOX in Denmark,[4] and was subsequently screened at international festivals, including the Seattle International Film Festival, where it received its North American premiere,[5] and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.[6]

In 2013, Bisgaard was nominated for a Robert Award for his short documentary Ghettodrengen.[7] Bisgaard later directed the short documentary Fra hjertet (2017), serving as director, cinematographer and producer,[8] which was nominated for a Robert Award in 2018.[9]

In 2025, Bisgaard co-wrote and co-directed The End of Quiet, a documentary feature that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.[10][11] The film was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature and the Audience Award, shared with co-writer and co-director Mikael Lypinski.[12]
