Hippodrome de Vittel, also known as the Hippodrome de l'Île Verte, is a horse racing venue located in Vittel, in the Vosges department of Grand Est, France. It is used for trotting, flat racing and jump racing, including hurdle, steeplechase and cross-country races.[1][2]

History

The race course was created as part of the development of the Vittel spa resort by the Société Générale des Eaux Minérales de Vittel, under its president Jean Bouloumié. It was inaugurated the 15th July 1904.[3][4] Several of its original buildings have been preserved. They include the main grandstand dating from 1904, the Pari Mutuel Urbain betting chalet built in 1923 and the weighing pavilion of 1935. These buildings were designed by architect Fernand César and were registered as historic monuments on 22 November 1990.[5] For many years racing at Vittel was mainly devoted to trotting. In 1972 flat and jump racing returned to the programme, giving the racecourse its present multi-discipline character.[6][7]

Racing

The site covers 43 hectares and has separate grass tracks for its principal racing disciplines. The flat track is 1,837 metres long, the obstacle track 1,700 metres and the trotting track 1,603 metres. All are right-handed. The racecourse also includes a cross-country course, with races run over a distance of 5,200 metres.[8][9] The racing season is mainly held during the summer and continues to include meetings for trotters, flat racers and jumpers.[10]
