Giuseppe Leo Guizzi (born 11 February 1947) is an Italian mechanical engineer and academic. His research focused on fluid mechanics, thermodynamic power cycles, energy conversion systems and the monitoring and control of thermal power plants. He became a full professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 1986 and served as president of its degree programme in energy engineering from 2001 to 2017.[1]

Early life and education

Guizzi was born in Rome, Italy. His mother, Clara Zaloscer, was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, from Central Europe. She narrowly escaped deportation to the Nazi camps and reached Rome toward the end of 1943, during the Nazi occupation. His father, Odoardo Guizzi, was a Catholic Italian lawyer who was active in the anti-fascist movement.

His mother was a granddaughter of Rabbi Dr. Hosea Jacobi, the longtime Chief Rabbi of Yugoslavia. Her uncles Dr. Ivan Jacobi[2], Dr. Hugo Spitzer[3] and aunt Clara Barmaper Jacobi were leading figures in the Jewish community in Yugoslavia.

His mother's cousins were Prof. Hilde Zaloscer a renowned art historian and coptologist and Dr. Erna Zaloscer Sailer a lawyer, resistance fighter against the Nazis, social worker and Austrian diplomat.

Guizzi attended the Augusto Righi scientific high school in Rome before studying mechanical engineering at Sapienza University of Rome. He graduated on 20 July 1971 with honours.[1] From 1972 to 1973 he served as second lieutenant in the Italian Air Force Engineering Corps.

Academic career

From 1975 to 1986, Guizzi taught fluid mechanics at the University of L'Aquila. In 1981, he also became an associate professor in the same field at Sapienza University of Rome.[1]

In 1986, he became a full professor in the field of fluid mechanics and energy systems at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His teaching included fluid mechanics design as well as the measurement, control and diagnostics of energy systems. He held the chair of "Progetti di Macchine" (Machine Design) from 1986 to 2017, after which he continued teaching "Misure, controllo e diagnostica dei sistemi energetici" (Measurement, Control and Diagnostics of Energy Systems) until 2020.[1]

Guizzi served as president of the university's mechanical engineering degree programme from 1986 to 1989. Afterwards he served as president of the university's degree programme in energy engineering from 2001 to 2017.[1] From 2002 to 2005, he was a member of the national committee (Giunta) representing Italian university professors in the field of fluid mechanics.[1]

Research

Guizzi authored approximately 150 publications on fluid mechanics and energy systems. His research focused on fluid mechanics and the conversion, monitoring and optimisation of energy systems. His work has included cavitation in hydraulic machinery, steam-power systems, cogeneration, power-plant repowering, hydrogen cycles, fuel cells, thermal-energy storage and industrial waste-heat recovery.[1]

Early in his research work Guizzi together with Filippo Ugolini conducted theoretical experimental studies of high-temperature cavitation and preliminary work on a total artificial heart, powered by muscular energy. He also worked with Marco Gambini on computational models for steam-cycle power plants, fired and heat-recovery steam generators and real-time diagnostic systems for thermal power plants.

From 2011 to 2012, Guizzi's and Filippo Ugolini's research was associated with the European Union funded SEAKERS (Sea Kinetic Energy Recovery System) project, an FP7 initiative aimed at developing a kinetic energy recovery system for sailing yachts that converted wave induced boat motion into electrical energy.[4] In 2012, Guizzi and Michele Manno presented a computational model at the ECOS conference in Perugia for evaluating yacht motion under different wave conditions and estimating the kinetic energy available for recovery.[5] In 2014, Guizzi, Manno and collaborators published theoretical and experimental results from the project in Renewable Energy and Energy Procedia, including experimental testing of the linear generator prototype.[6][7]

With Michele Manno, he studied fuel-cell cogeneration systems intended to meet the electrical and thermal demands of data centres.[8]

His esearch also included the recovery of low-temperature waste heat from industrial pasta-drying processes and the effect of heat pump heating and cooling systems on the driving range of electric vehicles.[9][10]

Guizzi, together with Marco Gambini and Michela Vellini proposed the Gas Injection Steam Cycle, or G.I.S.T. cycle, an internally combusted gas and steam cycle intended to increase the operating temperature and efficiency of steam-power systems.[1]

Guizzi's research also contributed to the development of liquid air energy storage (LAES) systems. In 2015, Guizzi, Michele Manno, Ludovica Maria Tolomei and Ruggero Maria Vitali published a thermodynamic model of a stand-alone LAES system incorporating the recovery and storage of both compression heat and cold energy, with a calculated round-trip efficiency of approximately 54.4%.[11] AA 2021 review of LAES technology included this configuration among the systems assessed in the development of the field.[12]
