Biography
Fountas was born on 13 February 1925, in Mavrolithari.[1]
He attended the Dramatic School at the Athens Odeum. He appeared for the first time in the theatre in Nyfiatiko tragoudi ("Bridal Song") and his first film in 1944. He was awarded at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 1966 and 1967 for his participation in his films With the Shine in the Eyes and Fever on the Road.[2][3]
He remained popular and he is best remembered for his role in the movie Stella with Melina Mercouri where he pronounced one quote, which was satirized in the movie Straight Story in 2006.[4]
Fountas married Eleni Episkopou in 1947 and that had two children, Tzella (b. 1950), and Thymios (b. 1952).[5] His second wife was the famous dancer Chrysoula Zoka (1931–2015), whom he met in 1954 and they fell in love with each other. They finally married in 1965 and had a son, Panos (b. 1969).[6][7] Chrysoula died of cancer on 12 April 2015, at age 84.[8][9] She was buried on 14 April 2015, at the New Cemetery of Glyfada.[10]
Fountas died at Metropolitan Hospital on 28 November 2010, at age 85.[11] In the last years of his life he suffered from Alzheimer's disease.[12][13] He was buried two days later at the First Cemetery of Athens.[14][15]
