The Garima Chaudhary incident refers to the rape and murder of Garima Chaudhary, a three-year-old girl from Bara District, Nepal. Garima went missing from her home in Jitpur Simara, Bara, on August 16, 2026. Her body was found two days later inside an old house near her home. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that she had been raped and murdered. The case prompted protests in Bara and Kathmandu and led to demands for stronger action against those responsible and changes to laws concerning serious crimes. [1][2]
Disappearance and death
Garima was reported missing from her home in Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1, Bara, on the morning of August 16. According to Nepal Police information reported by Nepal Views, her mother, Manamati Chaudhary Tharu, filed a missing-person complaint at the District Police Office, Bara, at about 11:15 a.m. after Garima disappeared at around 8:30 a.m. [3]
Her body was found on August 18 inside an old house close to her home during a search operation. The body was sent to Provincial Hospital in Kalaiya for a post-mortem examination. Deputy Superintendent of Police Min Gurung said the preliminary investigation indicated that Garima had been raped and subsequently murdered. [1]
According to reporting by The Kathmandu Post, police said Garima had allegedly been lured from her home with a chocolate and taken to an abandoned house nearby. [4]
Investigation
Police arrested two teenagers in connection with the case after Garima's body was found. A district court subsequently granted police a four-day remand to investigate allegations of rape and murder. [5]
The investigation later became the subject of controversy after a video purportedly showing a teenage suspect giving a statement during a police investigation circulated on social media. The Kathmandu Post reported that the circulation of the footage raised concerns about a possible breach of privacy and investigation procedures. Police began investigating how the footage had been leaked. [6]
Protests
The case prompted protests in several parts of Bara. Demonstrations were reported in Kalaiya, Kolhabi, Dumarwana, Badharwa and Jitpur Simara. Protesters demanded action against those responsible for the killing and raised concerns about the police response to Garima's disappearance. [7]
The Birgunj–Pathlaiya section of the Tribhuvan Highway was blocked during the protests. On August 21, the road remained blocked for a third consecutive day as Garima's family continued a sit-in demanding justice. Her father, Manoj Chaudhary, said the family had not consented to an agreement reached between the local administration and political representatives. [8]
Protests also took place in Kathmandu. Demonstrators gathered at Maitighar demanding an impartial investigation, legal action against those responsible and justice for Garima's family. [9]
A further protest was held at Maitighar Mandala on August 23 by an independent citizens' group. Protesters called for an impartial investigation, strict legal action and disclosure of information about the case. [10]
Government response
On August 23, the Government of Nepal and Garima's parents reached a three-point agreement following discussions at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Under the agreement, the government committed to reviewing existing legal provisions concerning offences and punishments for serious crimes and to submitting recommendations for possible new legislation within seven days. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs was to form a seven-member committee for the review. [11]
The agreement also provided for government coordination with local authorities to construct a statue or memorial for Garima in accordance with her family's wishes. Her parents were additionally assured that they could perform her funeral rites according to their customs and traditions. [11]
The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by five ministers, including Home Minister Sudan Gurung, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sovita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Geeta Chaudhary. Garima's parents, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and Manamati Chaudhary, signed on behalf of the family. [12]
Public and political response
The case generated wider public discussion about the protection of children, sexual violence and criminal punishment in Nepal. Protesters called for stronger legal action and greater accountability from authorities. The case was also included in international coverage by SBS Nepali, which reported on the protests and the subsequent three-point agreement between the government and Garima's parents. [13]
