Ganthela yundingensis is a species of primitively segmented trapdoor spider in the subfamily Heptathelinae of the family Liphistiidae. It was described from Fujian Province in southeastern China and is the type species of the genus Ganthela.[1][2]
Taxonomy
The species was formally described by Xin Xu and colleagues in 2015 during a genus-level revision of the family Liphistiidae. In the same study, Xu and Matjaž Kuntner established the genus Ganthela and designated G. yundingensis as its type species.[2] The specific name refers to Mount Yunding, the locality from which the type specimens were collected.[2]
Description
The male holotype has a body length of 9.80 mm (0.386 in), while the female paratype measures 13.23 mm (0.521 in); these measurements exclude the chelicerae. Both specimens have a light-brown carapace and opisthosoma, with dark-brown tergites. The male has twelve tergites and seven spinnerets.[2]
The species is distinguished from other known members of Ganthela by characteristics of the reproductive structures. The male has two marginal projections on the contrategulum, one of which is scale-like, while the female lacks genital stalks.[2]
Distribution and type material
The male holotype and female paratype were collected on 8 July 2013 at Mount Yunding in Tingxi, Tong'an District, Xiamen, Fujian Province, at an elevation of 631 m (2,070 ft). The type locality was recorded at approximately 24°52′N 118°10′E / 24.87°N 118.16°E. The specimens were deposited at the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.[2]
