Gabriela: The Musical is an upcoming original Philippine musical produced by Barefoot Theatre Collaborative, reimagining the life of 18th-century Ilocano revolutionary leader Gabriela Silang.[1] The musical features a book and lyrics by Pat Valera, music and musical direction by Myke Salomon, and direction by Mikko Angeles. Salomon's wife, actress Gab Pangilinan, stars in the title role.[2] The production is scheduled to run from November 13 to December 6, 2026, at Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, in Quezon City.[3]

Background

Gabriela Silang (María Josefa Gabriela Cariño Silang, 1731–1763) was a Filipino revolutionary leader who assumed command of the Ilocos revolt against Spanish colonial rule following the assassination of her husband, Diego Silang, in May 1763, making her the first woman in Philippine history known to have led an armed uprising.[4] Diego Silang had allied with British forces then occupying Manila during the Seven Years' War, briefly establishing an autonomous Ilocano government before he was killed by former allies acting on behalf of Spanish authorities.[5] Gabriela rallied his remaining forces and continued the revolt for approximately four months before being captured and executed in Vigan in September 1763.[6] She is popularly remembered in Philippine culture and iconography as "La Generala,"[4] typically depicted on horseback wielding a bolo, and "Joan of Arc of Ilocandia."[7]

Development

Gabriela: The Musical is written by playwright Pat Valera, whose credits include Mula Sa Buwan, Dekada '70, and Bar Boys: The Musical — the last of which shares its director, Mikko Angeles, and composer, Myke Salomon, with the Gabriela production.[2] Valera has stated that the musical grew out of more than five years of research into Gabriela Silang's life, prompted by his interest in why her story is conventionally told only in the aftermath of her husband's death rather than as an active participant in the revolution from its outset.[8] The production follows Barefoot Theatre Collaborative's staging of the psychological thriller anthropology by Lauren Gunderson,[9] and reunites much of the creative team behind Bar Boys: The Musical, which had sold-out runs in 2024 and 2025.[10][11]

Open auditions for lead, supporting, and ensemble roles were announced in late March 2026,[12] seeking male and female performers fluent in Filipino with strong singing, acting, and dance backgrounds, across age ranges spanning late teens to the early 50s.[1][2][3] Applicants were required to submit a recorded rendition of a Filipino song and a dance sample by April 15, 2026, with in-person callbacks held on April 21, 2026. The production period, encompassing rehearsals and performances, was set to run from September through December 2026, with rehearsals based in Quezon City.

Premise

Set against the backdrop of the Ilocos revolt of 1762–1763, Gabriela: The Musical is described by its creators as blending myth, magic, and mystery to present Gabriela Silang not as a footnote to her husband's death, defined by grief and vengeance, but as a co-author of the revolution present from its beginning and later tasked with holding it together as it fractures.[2][13] The narrative follows Silang reconnecting with her Itneg (Tinguian) heritage as she moves between worlds, becoming, in the production's own framing, "both battleground and bridge."[2] Barefoot Theatre Collaborative has described the work at its core as a love story about people who believed a different life was possible, tracing Gabriela's journey from a woman searching for wholeness to a leader who discovers that strength lies not in the absence of brokenness, but in the courage to be transformed by it.[13]
