Exxpress (stylized as "eXXpress") is an Austrian new-right boulevard online-plattform.[1]
"Exxpress" was founded by Richard Schmitt, former editor-in-chief and CEO Eva Schütz-Hieblinger. Exxpress is owned by 77 % Vius SE of German tech-billionair Frank Gotthardt, which is operating the far-right news outlet "Nius" in Germany.[1]
Due to false reporting, relationships with far-right activists and other scandals, Express itself is repeatedly the subject of reporting by other media outlets.[2]
History
Richard Schmitt is a former editor of yellow-press medium Kronen Zeitung. He and the businesswomean Eva Schütz-Hieblinger createt Exxpres in 2021. The medium was financially backed by the ÖVP-circle of Eva Schütz and her husband, the investor Alexander Schütz.[3]
Content
Media observers classify the portal as a right-wing troublemaker or tabloid medium. It focuses heavily on issues such as migration, crime, and criticism of left-wing or green politicians.[1]
The "Exxpress" has repeatedly come under criticism for sensationalized headlines, one-sided reporting and sometimes corrected false reports.[4] The media outlet has been involved in legal disputes on several occasions and has been ordered to pay damages for certain reports. "Exxpress" had false accusations against Tagesspiegel journalist Sebastian Leber, wrongly labeling Leber a human trafficker for his reporting on refugees. The medium lost a trial about their fake news.[2]
