Erik Spiekermann (born 30 May 1947) is a German art historian, typographer, designer, information architect and writer.[1] He divides his time between Berlin, London and San Francisco. He runs Hacking Gutenberg, an experimental letterpress printing workshop in Berlin.[2]
Early life and education
Spiekermann studied art history at the Free University of Berlin, funding himself by running a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house.[3]
Career
In 1989, Spiekermann co-founded FontShop with Joan Spiekermann. The company was an early mail-order distributor of computer fonts.[4][5]
Spiekermann left MetaDesign in 2001 and set up United Designers Network with his wife Susanna Dulkinys. The practice later became SpiekermannPartners and, following a 2009 merger with Eden Design & Communication, operated as Edenspiekermann.[4][6]
He participated in the creation of corporate identities and other works, including redesigns of the publications The Economist and Reason.[7]
Spiekermann is an honorary professor at the University of the Arts Bremen. He received the Gerrit Noordzij Prize from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and an honorary doctorate from ArtCenter College of Design, United States of America. In 2007, the Royal Society of Arts named him an Honorary Royal Designer for Industry.[8]
In 2020 Spiekermann set up TOC Publishing.[9]
He appeared in the 2007 documentary film Helvetica.
