The Employment Rights (Dispute Resolution) Act 1998 (c. 8) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom concerning dispute resolution in British labour law.

Purpose

The goal of the legislation was to allow disputes to be resolved speedily, efficiently and economically.[1]

Provisions

The 1998 act empowered the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) to create arbitration hearings as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism to the employment tribunals.[2] The scheme is known as the Acas Arbitration Scheme.[3]

The act renamed industrial tribunals to employment tribunals.[4]

In practice

In 2003 to 2004 the number of tribunal claims was around 50,000 each year. The number of disputes attracted to arbitration under the 1998 act scheme was seven.[5]
