Ciudad de Mahón is a Spanish Ro-Pax ferry owned by the Grimaldi Group and operated on bareboat charter by Baleària on the route between Motril and Tanger Med. Built in 2008 by Astillero Hijos de J. Barreras in Vigo as Volcán de Tijarafe for Naviera Armas, the 164-meter vessel served extensively across the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, and North Africa before being sold to Grimaldi's Trasmed in 2022, renamed Ciudad de Mahón, and later chartered to Baleària in 2024.
Service
Launched on 30 August 2007 at the Astillero Hijos de J. Barreras shipyard in Vigo with the name of Volcán de Tijarafe and delivered on 28 April 2008 to Naviera Armas, it entered service on 5 May on the routes between Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Valverde, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Arrecife.[1]
From 14 June to 28 September 2008 it operates on the connections between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Funchal and Portimão.[2] On 16 July 2021, its sale to Grimaldi Trasmed was announced and it was transferred to the connections between Barcelona, Ibiza and Valencia. On December 28, 2021, it was rammed by the GNV Sealand in Ibiza due to bad weather.[3]
In January 2022 it was renamed Ciudad de Mahón. In February 2024 it was bareboat chartered for 5 years to Baleària,[4] continuing to operate on the same route.[5][6] In May 2025 it was transferred to the connections between Motril and Tangier Med, where it still operates today replacing its fleetmate Dénia Ciutat Creativa.[7][8]
