Production
Development
The project was first announced under the working title Titan, bringing together director Mike P. Nelson and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy following their collaboration on the 2021 Wrong Turn reboot. Production later shifted under the working title Boiúna: Legend of the Amazon before being finalized as Beware Boiúna. [8][9]
The film is produced by Robert Kulzer of Constantin Film and Jeremy Bolt of JB Pictures, continuing a collaboration with producers from franchises like Resident Evil.[10]
Writing and Research
The screenplay was penned by Alan B. McElroy with a story co-developed by McElroy and Tony Giglio. The narrative draws heavily from Brazilian folklore, specifically the legend of the Boiúna (or Cobra Grande), a gigantic mythical serpent said to inhabit the Amazon river basin. Director Mike P. Nelson noted that the production aimed to ground the creature feature in realistic stakes, focusing heavily on character development, regional atmosphere, and authentic environmental tension before introducing the massive legacy predator.[11]
Filming
Principal photography took place in Amazon rainforest, requiring the crew and cast—including Madeira, Rothe, and Marshall-Green to shoot around the Amazon River and the jungle regions near Leticia, Colombia.[12] Because of the remote setting and local ecosystem, the production utilized professional animal wranglers on set to protect the cast and crew from potential wildlife hazards, such as venomous and poisonous species native to the Amazon.[13][14]
Release
Beware Boiúna is distributed by Lionsgate Films. The official trailer and promotional rollout debuted in August 2026, featuring viral marketing campaigns.[15][16] The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on October 2, 2026.[17][18] The film will premiere at the Fantastic Fest on September 2026.[19]
