Bacillus submarinus
Bacillus submarinus is an obsolete name proposed in 1944 by Claude E. ZoBell and Harvey C. Upham for a marine bacterium.[1] The name was not included in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names published in 1980 and has no standing in prokaryotic nomenclature.
A culture deposited under the name B. submarinus, strain 569 (NRS 1120), was later identified as a typical strain of Bacillus subtilis. It was noted, however, that the culture differed from the original description of B. submarinus in several characteristics, including its temperature optimum, oxygen requirements and growth in freshwater medium.[2] The same culture, ATCC 14415, is currently maintained by the American Type Culture Collection as Bacillus subtilis, with Bacillus submarinus recorded as the name under which it was originally deposited.[3]
