Mesobacillus boroniphilus is a species of Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium that requires boron for growth and can tolerate high boron concentrations. It was first isolated from naturally boron-rich soil in the Hisarcık area of Kütahya Province, Turkey.[1] The specific epithet boroniphilus means "boron-loving", referring to the organism's requirement for boron and its ability to tolerate elevated boron concentrations.[2]
The type strain is T-15ZT (= DSM 17376T = IAM 15287T = ATCC BAA-1204T = JCM 21738T).[1][2]
Taxonomy
The species was originally described in 2007 as Bacillus boroniphilus. In 2020, it was transferred to the newly established genus Mesobacillus as Mesobacillus boroniphilus, based on phylogenomic and comparative genomic analyses of species formerly assigned to the genus Bacillus.[3] Bacillus boroniphilus is consequently treated as the homotypic synonym and original combination of the species name.[2]
