Schinkia azotoformans is a species of motile, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, denitrifying bacterium. It was originally isolated from soil and described as Bacillus azotoformans.[1] The species can grow anaerobically using electron acceptors including nitrate, nitrite and nitrous oxide, which it reduces during denitrification. The specific epithet azotoformans means "nitrogen-forming". The type strain is strain 1T (= ATCC 29788T = DSM 1046T = CCM 2849T).
In 2020, the species was transferred to the newly established genus Schinkia on the basis of phylogenomic and comparative genomic analyses.[2] S. azotoformans is the type species of the genus.
