She has two brothers, Rahul, a fashion photographer and Rohit.[5][9][10] She has a half-brother, Sahil, and two step-sisters, Shaheen and Genevieve; latter being the mother of actress Kiara Advani.[10][11][12][13]

And as for her director and how he felt about her performance, his disappointment at her losing out on the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress speaks to Gulzar's deep appreciation of what Patel brought to the part of Maya: 'She was sitting with her husband Kanwaljit next to my table. The moment the award went to Sonu Walia (for Khoon Bhari Maang [1988]), I saw her face fall. We were all expecting her to get it. That's one grouse I'll always have against Filmfare. I still feel bad about it.' (Razdan, Shalini. 19 June 2006. 'Gulzar on Ijaazat?')
