Aminu Safana
Aminu Shuaibu Safana ⓘ (April 1961 – October 17, 2007) was a Nigerian politician who represented the Batsari/Safana/Danmusa constituency of Katsina State in the House of Representatives.[1]
A doctor by training, Safana was a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University and the Universities of Leeds and London.[2] He had been a confidant of President Umaru Yar'Adua, and had served as secretary of Katsina State's government while Yar'Adua was governor.[1]
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2003, and was reelected in 2007. He was a People's Democratic Party member and chairman of the house's Committee on Health.[2] On October 17, 2007, Safana collapsed on the assembly's floor; he was pronounced dead the same day at the Abuja National Hospital, the cause of death being identified as a heart attack.[1] Safana's death occurred amid a prolonged crisis in the House of Representatives over contracts worth ₦628 million (about $5 million) awarded by Speaker Patricia Etteh for renovations and vehicles, which had paralysed legislative business for weeks.[3] Safana, a supporter of Etteh, collapsed after taking part in a heated floor demonstration and asked colleagues to take him to hospital; Reuters reported that he was diabetic and that the National Hospital's head said the immediate cause of death had not been confirmed.[3] His death left the House one seat short of its full membership ahead of the election of Dimeji Bankole as Speaker in 2007.[3]
