Akagawa Dam (Japanese: 赤川ダム) is an asphalt-faced fill dam on the Akagawa River in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The dam is used for agricultural irrigation and is operated by the Tochigi Prefectural Government.[1]

The dam has a height of 17.5 m (57 ft) and a crest length of 221 m (725 ft). Its embankment has a volume of approximately 114,000 m3 (4,000,000 cu ft). The reservoir has a total storage capacity of 327,000 m3 (11,500,000 cu ft) and an effective storage capacity of 272,000 m3 (9,600,000 cu ft). The dam's catchment area is 3.2 km2 (1.2 sq mi), while the reservoir has a surface area of approximately 6 ha (15 acres).[1]

Location and purpose

Akagawa Dam is located in Fukuoka-chō, Hosono, in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture. It is situated on the Akagawa River, which forms part of the Tone River system.[1]

The principal purpose of the dam is agricultural irrigation. In the classification used by the Japan Dam Foundation, the dam is assigned the purpose code A, indicating agricultural irrigation.[1]

The dam is located within Utsunomiya Forest Park, a recreational area surrounding the reservoir and forested landscape. The park includes facilities such as a rest area, food services, campsites, barbecue facilities, fishing areas and cycling routes.[2]

Design and construction

Akagawa Dam is classified as an asphalt-facing fill dam (FA). This is a type of embankment dam in which an asphalt facing is used as the principal impervious layer on the upstream face.[1]

The dam project began in 1965 and was completed in 1970.[1]

The Japanese dam register identifies the structure as dam number 0565. The register lists Tochigi Prefecture as the dam operator and San'yō Construction Industry Co., Ltd. as the contractor responsible for the dam body.[2]

The dam is located at approximately 36°37′12″N 139°47′26″E / 36.62000°N 139.79056°E / 36.62000; 139.79056.[1]

Reservoir

The reservoir formed by Akagawa Dam has a total storage capacity of 327,000 m3 (11,500,000 cu ft). Its effective storage capacity is 272,000 m3 (9,600,000 cu ft), representing the portion available for the dam's intended water-use purposes.[2]

The reservoir has a surface area of approximately 6 ha (15 acres) when fully impounded. The directly contributing catchment area is approximately 3.2 km2 (1.2 sq mi).[2]

Recreation

The dam and its reservoir are located within Utsunomiya Forest Park. The area is used for recreation and includes camping facilities, barbecue areas, fishing facilities, cycling routes and other visitor amenities.[2]

The presence of these facilities makes the reservoir and surrounding forest a recreational destination in addition to its function as agricultural water infrastructure.[2]

Name

Akagawa Dam is also known as Hosono Dam (Japanese: 細野ダム). According to the Japan Dam Foundation, the facility was originally developed as the Hosono irrigation pond and was formerly recorded under the name Hosono Dam. The current name Akagawa Dam was adopted because another erosion-control dam upstream also bears the name Hosono Dam, which could cause confusion.[2]
