Adir Shiffman (born 1974) is an Australian entrepreneur and business executive. He is the Executive Chairman of Catapult Sports (ASX: CAT), a sports performance analytics company.[1]

Early life and education

Shiffman graduated from Monash University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.[2] He practised as a doctor before moving into business around 2001.

Career

Shiffman founded Global Reviews (Asia Pacific) Pty Ltd in 2000 while still practising medicine,[3] and later co-founded StartHere Pty Ltd.[4] In 2013 he was appointed chairman of Disruptive Investment Group Limited (ASX: DVI), later renamed iBuyNew Group Limited (ASX: IBN), resigning in March 2017 after the company entered receivership.[5] He advised the founders of market research platform Qualie in its early stages and later became its co-founder and chairman.[6] He has also worked as an investor in Daily Blooms, an online florist founded by Courtney Ray, becoming an external investor in the business in late 2021.[7] Shiffman has served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of ASX-listed hipages Group Holdings since 2023,[8] writes a column for the Australian Financial Review on business and startups,[9] and co-hosts The Contrarians podcast with Adam Schwab, co-founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes.[10]

Catapult Sports

Catapult Sports was founded in Melbourne in 2006 by engineers Shaun Holthouse and Igor van de Griendt, building on athlete-tracking technology developed with the Australian Institute of Sport.[11] Shiffman invested in the company in 2011, when it reported annual revenue of approximately $2 million,[12] and was appointed Executive Chairman in 2013.[8] Catapult listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 19 December 2014.[13] As of 2025, the company reported total revenue of approximately $187 million,[14] with its technology used by more than 4,000 sports teams across over 40 sports and 100 countries,[15] though it has continued to report net losses in recent financial periods.[16] Holthouse and van de Griendt remain on the board as Non-Executive Directors.[11]

Sleeping Duck litigation

Shiffman invested in Sleeping Duck, an online mattress company founded by Selvam Sinnappan and Winston Wijeyeratne, from 2018 in an advisory capacity in exchange for an equity stake.[17] During the period of his involvement, Sleeping Duck's value grew substantially, from a business generating under $5 million in annual revenue to a valuation of $121–196 million by October 2021.[17] After the relationship deteriorated from late 2020, his investment vehicle, BBHF Pty Ltd, sued Sleeping Duck and its founders in the Supreme Court of Victoria in November 2021, alleging oppressive conduct toward minority shareholders.[17][18] Following trial in late 2023, Justice Jim Delany dismissed the claims in June 2024, finding Shiffman a credible witness but ruling the evidence did not support his allegations of oppression;[17][19] he was ordered to pay costs.[20]
