Asociația Club Sportiv SR Municipal Brașov (Romanian pronunciation: [braˈʃov]), commonly known as SR Brașov or simply Brașov, is a Romanian football club based in the city of Brașov, Brașov County, which competes in the Liga IV.

The team was created in 2017 by the supporters of the original FC Brașov, which was dissolved that year. "SR" stands for Steagul Roșu ("the Red Flag") or Steagul Renaște ("Steagul Reborn").

History

Bankruptcy of the historic FC Brașov

During the spring of 2015, FC Brașov, the historic club of the city, entered insolvency after accumulating significant financial problems. The club was relegated from Liga I at the end of the 2014–15 season and underwent a major squad reconstruction during the following summer, with promotion back to the top flight set as its principal objective.

The 2015–16 season ended with FC Brașov outside the promotion places. Financial difficulties continued into the summer of 2016 and, for a period, the club's participation in the following Liga II campaign was uncertain. Part of the immediate financial pressure was alleviated when former Brașov player Alexandru Chipciu was transferred by FCSB to Anderlecht, with FC Brașov receiving money through its entitlement connected to the transfer.[1]

Cornel Țălnar was appointed head coach for the 2016–17 season, with promotion again regarded as the club's principal sporting objective and one of the few possible solutions to its worsening financial situation. Despite a competitive start, FC Brașov eventually finished 7th and failed to earn promotion.

After the end of the season, the club announced that it would not enter the following Liga II championship. Unable to overcome its accumulated debts, the historic FC Brașov entered bankruptcy and ceased sporting activity in 2017.[2]

Supporters' revival and promotion to Liga III (2017–2018)

Following the disappearance of the historic club, members of the Flag-bearers Supporters League established AS SR Brașov in the summer of 2017. The initials SR referred to Steagul Roșu (Red Flag), one of the historic names associated with football in Brașov. The club was created as a supporter-backed project intended to preserve the identity and football culture associated with the former FC Brașov.[3]

SR Brașov entered Liga IV Brașov for the 2017–18 season and immediately won the county championship. In the promotion play-off, the Yellow and Blacks faced Nemere Ghelința, the Covasna County champions, winning 1–0 in Brașov and 2–0 away to secure a 3–0 aggregate victory and promotion to Liga III at the first attempt.[4]

Seven seasons in Liga III (2018–2025)

SR Brașov spent the following seven consecutive seasons in Liga III. In its first national-league campaign, 2018–19, the club finished 7th in Series III. It followed with an 11th-place finish in the shortened 2019–20 season.

The club's best campaign came in 2020–21, when SR Brașov finished 2nd in Series V and qualified for the promotion play-offs to Liga II. The Brașov side faced Vedița Colonești in the first round, losing 0–1 at home before drawing 1–1 away, and was eliminated 1–2 on aggregate.[5]

During the 2021–22 season, SR struggled near the bottom of Series V but avoided relegation in the final round of the play-out after defeating FC Hermannstadt II 2–0. The result ensured another season in the third tier.[6]

SR remained a regular third-tier club over the next seasons and again challenged for the upper positions. In January 2023, former Brașov player Ionel Pârvu was appointed head coach with qualification for the promotion play-offs set as the objective.[7]

The club was relegated on sporting grounds at the end of the 2023–24 season, but remained in Liga III for 2024–25 after receiving an invitation from the Romanian Football Federation to fill a vacant place in the competition.[8] SR Municipal Brașov was therefore included among the six representatives of Brașov County at the start of the 2024–25 third-division season.[9]

The municipal FC Brașov project (2021–2026)

In parallel with SR Brașov, a separate football project appeared in 2021. Corona Brașov, which had earned promotion to Liga II, transferred its second-division place to a newly created organisation operating as ACS FC Brașov Steagul Renaște. The club was allowed to use the FC Brașov name and identity with the support of the municipal authorities.[10]

The supporters associated with SR Brașov refused to support the municipal project and protested against its use of the historic identity.[11]

The new FC Brașov competed in Liga II between 2021 and 2023. Although it retained its second-tier status on sporting grounds at the end of the 2022–23 campaign, the club was denied the certification required to participate in the 2023–24 season. An appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was rejected in August 2023, ending the senior team's activity.[12]

The organisation continued briefly with youth teams, but in February 2024 it was excluded from all competitions organised by the Romanian Football Federation.[13] The municipality formally withdrew from the association in February 2025, and the club entered bankruptcy on 26 February 2026, with liquidation and eventual deregistration ordered by the Brașov Tribunal.[14][15]

Exclusion from Liga III and return to county football (2025–present)

SR Brașov's own situation deteriorated during 2025. The club publicly warned in the spring that its continued existence at national level was threatened by financial difficulties. According to club officials, a substantial part of its activity during the first months of 2025 had depended on private financing.[16]

Ahead of the 2025–26 season, SR failed to participate in its scheduled first-round Cupa României match. On 4 August 2025, the FRF disciplinary authorities excluded the club from competitions organised by the federation and relegated it from the national leagues.[17]

Unlike several other former Liga III clubs from Brașov County, SR continued its senior activity. The team entered the 2025–26 Liga IV Brașov season under the AS SR Brașov name.[18]

SR finished the championship in 7th place with 33 points from 24 matches.[19] Its final scheduled league match against ACS Hoghiz was awarded 3–0 to SR after the home side was unable to organise the fixture.[20]

As of August 2026, SR Brașov remained an active football club at county level. The club had therefore survived its exclusion from the national competitions, but its seven-season spell in Liga III had ended and it was again attempting to rebuild from the fourth tier.
