On 1 August 2026, a terrorist attack was carried out against the Norte de Santander Police Department in the city of Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, Colombia. The attack involved the detonation of a truck loaded with explosives targeting the facilities of the Norte de Santander Police Department (DENOR), located in the Tasajero neighborhood of the city, followed by additional explosions of separate devices.[1][2]
Background
Cúcuta, located on the border with Venezuela, has been a frequent target of violence by illegal armed groups, primarily the National Liberation Army (ELN) and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) dissidents, such as the 33rd Front. The Catatumbo region is particularly affected by the armed conflict, drug trafficking and territorial disputes.
The attack occurred during the Cúcuta Fair and just days before the presidential inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella, scheduled for 7 August 2026. The chosen location was near the Cenabastos (Central de Abastos), a busy wholesale market that receives numerous cargo trucks in the early morning hours.
Attack
In the early morning hours (approximately 3:20 a.m.), a modified truck loaded with explosives was detonated near the police command. The main explosion was followed by the launching of additional explosive devices in the area. The vehicle used in the attack was left engulfed in flames.
Due to the normal heavy traffic of supply trucks, the vehicle did not raise immediate suspicion. The blast caused significant material damage to police facilities, including accommodations and official vehicles, a BBVA bank branch and nearby commercial premises.
Preliminary reports indicated 10 to 11 people were injured, including 7–8 police officers and 3 civilians, in addition to a dog.[3] The injured were transferred to nearby medical centers.[4]
Aftermath
Following the attack, a security perimeter was established, nearby roads (including sections of Avenida Los Libertadores) were closed and anti-explosive verification operations were activated. Investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators are ongoing.[5]
Reactions
Authorities strongly condemned the attack. President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella described it as a "cowardly terrorist attack" and expressed solidarity with the wounded and their families, stating that "terrorism will not intimidate Colombia".
Outgoing Defense Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez attributed the attack to the ELN, labeling the group "narcoterrorists", and offered a reward of up to 200 million Colombian pesos for information leading to the capture of those responsible. The Norte de Santander Governor's Office also offered rewards and rejected the violent act.[6][7]
